2nd Grade News - Week 17


Today is officially the last day of the second quarter.  Where has the time gone?  Report cards will be going home in student backpacks next Friday.  I am so proud of the effort all of the students are showing.  It is amazing to see how much they can learn in such a short time period.  I am very proud of all my students!  No matter what scores your child receives on their report card, please praise them for the effort and hard work they have put in!

Academic Areas of Focus for Next Week:
Literacy:        Lucy Calkin’s Reader’s Workshop – Making Our Reading More Fluent
                                    -Understanding comparisons and literary language
                                    -Noticing when authors play with words
                                    -Finding the moral in folktales and fables
                        Lucy Calkin’s Writer’s Workshop – Opinion Writing
                                    -Making our writing stronger, longer, and more convincing
                                    -Focus: ending punctuation, appropriate upper and lower case letters,
                                                 spelling high frequency words correctly
                        Words Their Way – Differentiated phonics lessons for individual levels
Mathematics:  2D and 3D Shapes, Area, Introduction to Fractions
                        -2.OA.C.4 – Use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in
                        rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns; write an equation
                        to express the total as a sum of equal addends. (ex. 5x4 array could be
                        expressed as 5+5+5+5=20 or 4+4+4+4+4=20)
                        -2.G.A.1 – Recognizes and draws shapes having specified attributes, such as
                        the given number or angles or equal faces. Identify triangles, quadrilaterals,
                        pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.
                        -2.G.A.3 – Partitions circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal
                        shares; describes the shares using the words halves, thirds, fourths, half of,
                        a third of, a fourth of, ect. and describes the whole as two halves, three
                        thirds, four fourths.  Recognizes that equal shares of identical wholes need
                        not have the same shape.

2nd Grade News - Week 16


Welcome back!  Students were very excited to get back to school this week, see their friends, and to continue their education.  The end of the second quarter is rapidly approaching on January 24thth.  Over the next few weeks, students will be participating in individual and group assessments in mathematics, writing, and reading.  These assessments will provide me with the data I need to plan further groups and individualized instruction, as well as fill out student report cards. 
Academic Areas of Focus for Next Week:
Literacy:        Lucy Calkin’s Reader’s Workshop – Bigger Books: Amping Up Reading Power
                                    -Reading with fluency – Rereading, using punctuation to scoop up
                                    bigger phrase, noticing dialogue tags (using character voice), using
                                    meaning to read fluently
                        Calkin’s Writer’s Workshop – Opinion Writing – Writing About our Books
                                    -Writing opinion letters about characters and events in stories
                                    -Generating opinions by looking at picture
                                    -Retelling important parts
                        Words Their Way – Differentiated phonics lessons for individual levels

Mathematics:  Addition and Subtraction Word Problems Within 20
            -Interpreting visual information
            -Solving story problems by:
                        1. Understanding the problem – Underlining important info and circling the
                           question
                        2. Making a plan – Choosing the best strategy
                        3. Solving the Problem
                        4. Double checking your work

Health:  Unit 2 – Self control, cooperation, working in a group

                                                or moral.
                                                RL.2.3: Describe how characters in a story respond to major
                                                events and challenges.
                        Calkin’s Writer’s Workshop – Opinion Writing – Writing About our Books
                                    Priority Standards:
                                                W.2.1: Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic
                                                or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons
                                                that support the opinion, use linking words, connect opinion and
                                                reasons, and provide a concluding statement or sections.

Mathematics:  Addition and Subtraction Word Problems Within 20
            Priority Standards:
                        2.OA.A.1: Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-
step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting
together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by
using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to
represent the problem.
2.OA.B.2: Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. * By
end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers
